Reducing Sports Related Injury

Ever wonder what a professional in athletic performance would tell you about the things that are actually in your control to avoid getting injured? Here are a few tips from our team:

  1. Warm up properly - complete a warmup appropriate for the physical activity you plan to do. A good dynamic warmup will gradually increase your heart rate and make muscles pliable. This prepares muscle for physical activity and reduces the risk of injury.

  2. Use good technique - follow coaching cues or demonstration videos performed by athletes/sport professionals to make sure you are following proper mechanics. Good technique will help to maximize your workout and reduce the risk of getting injured.

  3. Following a training program created by a professional - be sure that your strength & conditioning program was written by a credentialed professional to ensure it is scientifically based, age appropriate, and will not lead to overtraining.

  4. Modify when necessary - make sure to adjust exercises properly based on equipment availability, physical limitations, or pre-existing injury. Failure to do so could result in further injury.
