Do You Know What’s In Your “Immune Health” Supplements?
Since COVID-19, the sales of “immune-boosting” dietary supplements have skyrocketed. Supporting, or boosting, the immune system has become a large topic of discussion and many consumers are buying such supplements through Amazon or other online platforms. A group of researchers purchased 30 featured immune health supplements from Amazon.com and analyzed them. This is what they found:
56% of products have inaccurate information label information
43% did not contain ingredients that were listed on the label
30% contained ingredients that were NOT disclosed on the label
53% had listed terms with no regulation/real meaning - “#1 Doctor Recommended,” ,“Stimulant Free,” “Quality Guaranteed,” “Lab tested and verified”
None of the products were 3rd party tested or contained a 3rd party testing seal.
While not all supplements contain banned substances, this information is important to show why taking 3rd party tested supplements is so important. Let’s say you happen to take one of the 30% of supplements that contained an ingredient that was not listed on the label. You’re allergic to that ingredient. This could have serious consequences not only to your athletic career but to your health and well-being. I recommend consulting with a sports dietitian before taking any supplement, but you should also ask yourself these questions:
Am I eating a balanced diet already?
Can I get this supplement through food?
Are there safe and effective options for this supplement available?
